LE MODULOR - Le Corbusier
According to Le Corbusier in his article "Excerpts from Le Modulor", "buildings should be the concern of heavy industry, and the component parts of houses should be mass produced". He states that in order to do that, everything should have a standardization system which leads to his idea development of having a universal system of proportions that every consultant in a project could easily use without the hesitation of transferring project units between calculations. Le Corbusier also says in his article that his dream was to set up on building sites to what he calls the "grid of proportions". This system will serve as a rule for the whole project, so he says. He then states that this system is also as one of the acts or rather "attempt" to make a reconciliation between maths, the human form as well as Architecture and beauty.
According to Le Corbusier's perspective, this system of grid that he gave birth to should have a name as all babies do, therefore, the term MODULAR was derived. The "Modular" is basically a measuring tool that is based on the human body and mathematics. Also known as the "Modular Man", it is based on a six-foot man that was from the usual height of the detectives in crime novels that corbusier enjoyed reading.
The "Modular Man" |
In conclusion, by having this "Modular man" system, it would be easier for us designer's to create or design a certain building with reference to this modular on the study of the human anthropometrics. This also applies to our bus stop design as well, where the build-up area is only of 3m by 1.5m and we have to thoroughly study on the human proportion as well as the anthropometrics to achieve the desired comfortable environment for the bus stop users.
