POST-FUNCTIONALISM
In the article Post-functionalism authored by Peter Eisenman, he discusses on the overall view of the Post Functional Architecture. The article starts with Eisenman discussing on two different exhibitions, the first one which was by "Architerrura Razional" at the Milan Trienale, and the second one being the "Ecole des Beaux Arts" exhibition which was at the museum of modern art in 1975. He debates that although the 2 exhibitions uses different treatments towards form and function, but they still have the same defintion of Architecture as a function and a type.
Eisenman also discusses on Humanism in Architecture. He states that the humanism is of concern of both program as well as theme. He then compares again between a french hotel to an english country house. Eisenman states that a french hotel has a more diversified floor plan with rooms of various sizes while the facade of the building is a more "rigorous and more proportional external facade". On the other hand, the english house has a more formal floor plan, forms and t defines the external massing of the home even more.
Polar opposite design considerations was what they understood of program and form back then, but with the rise of industrialization, the balance between form and function was disrupted. In the article, eisenman also argues that the Architects on the mid tweintieth century began to understood design as form follows function, but rather about "modernist" sensibility. He also states that "Modernist sensibility has to do with a changed mental attitude toward artifacts of the physical world", in other words, this change has resulted in a new "culture attitude".
